Lily Kaltyk, a shy, only child, raised in a tight-knit Ukrainian-Canadian community in southern Manitoba, grows into a timid and lonely woman. On the cusp of her fortieth birthday, she obsesses about her thwarted dream to become an architect, she grieves over the lack of a relationship, and she longs to escape a life of poverty with her stoic, unhappy mother.
When an unorthodox proposal offers a different future, she is filled with hope and expectation, but soon discovers that her life is dominated by overwhelming societal expectations; by worry over Brendan, a delinquent teenage boy who must live with her; by fear generated by her colourful and meddlesome neighbour, Dolly Inkpen, who believes that Lily’s beautiful Georgian-style home, the “Old Manse,” is haunted by a ghost named Charlotte. When she receives a shocking letter from her mother, her life changes forever.
Caught between duty and self-definition, Lily enrolls in an experimental architectural project in an attempt to find a career path, but in the tangled process, discovers something of even greater value.
